How to Tell My Teachers About My Depression?
Question by UncreativeCrayons: How to tell my teachers about my depression?
I am 15 and about a year and a half ago i diagnosed with severe depression and was put on antidepressants. I ran out of my pills and haven’t taken any since. I recently moved to puerto rico to live with my grandparents. Today i went to my new doctor to talk about these headaches i’ve been getting, and about allergies i’ve had since i came here 3 weeks ago and she didn’t seem to think it was a big deal, that everyone gets headaches and there are a lot of people who are allergic to the allergens that are in the air. All of a sudden she started asking me personal questions about my life in New York. She asked what was the reason that a 15 year old girl would want to get away from her mom, sibling and all of her friends in school. Why would i want to move with someone who won’t understand my personality, my fashion sense or the kind of music i like.My mom supports it, my grandparents are chrisitian and don’t like it. I can’t read, watch, listen, wear certain things and my doctor thinks that’s another problem, I will eventually get tired of being told what i can and can not do which will cause me to burst and say something hurtful to my grandparents. I am extremely stubborn and i have a short temper at times, which means she might be right. My grandma told her that i was sent over here because of my depression. It’s not a lie but it’s not entirely true either, there’s more to that but i wasn’t comfortable telling her since i just met her. The doctor got really worried and told me that i shouldn’t stop taking my pills no matter what. It’s a condition that should be taken seriously and has to be treated at all times. She said that it’s dangerous for a girl my age to have depression because we have higher risks for suicide, abuse of drug and alcohol, and a higher risk for teen pregnancy. I’ve never tried to commit suicide, used drugs, drank alcohol and i’ve never had sex. She wants me to go see a psychologist and i agree with her i should be able to talk to someone about what i’m feeling. I can’t talk to my grandparents because they will start assuming, judging and criticizing me, it’s just how they are. She also wants my grandma to let my teachers know of my depression. My depression has been effecting my school work quite a lot, I can’t concentrate on anything, i have no motivation and even the smallest tasks seem impossible. I have a lot of work to catch up on since i started school 2 months late. I feel so bad because my teachers must just think i am lazy and dumb because i always hand in work late and not to the best of my ability. How do i explain the real reason? I don’t want it to sound like an excuse. I feel mentally exhausted, i’m having migraines, i can’t sit still, i can’t concentrate, i’m having trouble remembering, my appetite has completely disappeared and i feel very anxious. I under stand what my doctor is saying, depression can lead to health problems because of the toll depression takes on the mental, emotional and physical body. The teachers should know so they can keep an eye on me. What i’m trying to ask is how to i tell my teachers, I mean what if I do and they start treating me differently? The students will start to dislike me and i’m already having enough trouble making friends as it is.
